Having had to watch plenty of television recently, I’m reminded about incorrect grammar and pointless phrases which seem to appear as regular as clockwork on breakfast television and most chat shows. Like me, you may find these really annoying:
1. “for me personally” – If it’s for you then it is personal.
2. Incorrect use of the word “literally”.
3. Saying “whatever” – You might as well, if you’ve got nothing of importance to impart.
4. Using the word “absolutely” as an all embracing affirmation. Use synonyms instead.
In addition, the use of verbal fillers such as “be that as it may”, “to be perfectly honest” and the inane “at the end of the day” do nothing to enhance your reputation as a speaker, presenter or tv show guest or expert.
One way of improving your vocabulary and general communication is to read. Another is to join a speaking club like Toastmasters International, or a debating society.
