I was sorry to hear of the death of veteran broadcaster Clive Roslin, aged 92.
Clive had a long and distinguished career in broadcasting. He was part of the original team at LBC when the station launched in 1973 and later joined BBC Radio 4. He continued to be involved in broadcasting long after many of his contemporaries had retired. I knew Clive through community radio, and inevitably we talked a good deal about broadcasting and it was Clive who came up with a phrase which has stayed with me ever since:
“Jeremy Jacobs is the Voice.”
I liked it, used it, and it became associated with me. But the credit for it was Clive’s. He clearly had the broadcaster’s knack of finding a few words that worked.

I recently came across this photo with Clive in the background, Phil Dave — with considerably more hair than he has today! — Joe Craig and me. It’s a lovely reminder of a period when we were all involved in radio and of the people you encountered along the way. Radio has always been as much about the personalities around the microphone as the technology in front of it.
I attended Clive’s memorial and afterwards caught up with Phil Dave now at Talk Radio and veteran radio presenter Jon Kaye.

There was something rather fitting about Phil appearing in both photographs, taken many years apart. We talked about radio, people we’d known and, naturally, Clive.
Every time I see the words “Jeremy Jacobs is the Voice,” I know exactly where they came from.
