Got a speech or a pitch coming up? These may help….
1. When constructing your speech think about the three main elements: Preparation, Structure and Style. Preparation and Structure will help you organise your thoughts, whereas Style is what happens on the day in the room.
2. Preparation includes these key points
· You must be aware of the audience – who they are, their age range, what they like and what they know.
· If you’re asked to speak for thirty minutes try and reduce it to twenty. Most people’s attention span doesn’t go on beyond twenty minutes. You can cover a lot in that time.
· Ask yourself this question “what do I want the audience to know when they leave”? Then when you edit your work, everything that doesn’t contribute can be cut.
3. The best structures are those which feature real people, real places and real problems. Putting it another way, if you’re pitching for business, explain how your business helps by telling the story of one of your customers’ case studies.
