Being An Event Host – Tip No. 25 – Don’t Mix In

One of the better events I’ve attended in recent times was one which was sponsored by a well-known newspaper. The host welcomed everybody in a professional and business-like manner he then introduced the guest speaker, a formidable politician and orator.

The gentleman concerned spoke for about 45 minutes and sat down receiving a standing ovation. Before the usual Q & A session, the host asked a series of questions which were duly answered with alacrity by the guest speaker. Once the event had closed and the audience of around 350 people were departing the hall, a man scrambled up on to the stage and began remonstrating with the host and a couple of the event organisers.

The host, clearly taken aback by the intruder’s effrontery barked at him and called for somebody from security even though his personal safety, in my view, wasn’t threatened…I don’t blame him at all for having “a go” at the man and his idiotic behaviour but it could have backfired very badly on the host. Luckily, only a handful of people witnessed the incident which was over as quickly as it had started.

Had I been there as host, I think I would have exited “stage left” without even acknowledging the person concerned, easier said than done no doubt but as a rule it’s best not to “mix in”.
