London, UK
I went along and listened to the former Editor of The Daily Telegraph, Charles Moore. He was speaking at an event in a Finchley synagogue about his authorized biography of Margaret Thatcher. A second volume will be out in due course. The first volume is entitled “Not For Turning” and covers her life and political career up to and including the Falklands War.
Charles was on stage for nearly an hour. He talked, occasionally using humour, on Margaret Thatcher’s early life, her relationship with husband Dennis, her religious views and the high regard for not only the local Jewish community in Finchley but the Jewish religion in general and the State of Israel. She famously remarked after visiting there for the first time in the 60’s that (and I’m paraphrasing a bit here so you’ll have to read the book) that “Israel didn’t pay people not to work”. Somewhat antithetical to today’s benefit culture in Britain.
Charles Moore spoke with an eloquence and clarity that kept the audience on the edge of their seats. He thoroughly deserved the rapturous round of applause when he had finished and once again after a brief Q&A session.
Ed. I purchased a signed copy, of course…
