Some know this as The Law Of Unintended Consequences. I can’t think of any event I’ve hosted or attended in the last few years where everything has gone to plan. Either the lights have fused, the microphone has broken, someone has been taken ill or there’s been a misunderstanding as to who was going to say what, when and for how long. (Presenters who attend auditions and even live gigs, will have had to re-learn lines with just minutes to go!)
What I’ve learnt is to prepare for the worse. I don’t mean that the event location is going to be fire-bombed or a homicidal maniac attacks you with a machete, I just think of what can go reasonably go wrong and prepare. 99% of the time nothing happens of any consequence but I think it’s wise to add these to your check list:
1. Always carry a spare(s) of items you may need. e.g. ear-pieces, handkerchiefs, shirt and tie.
2. Check with other speakers the day before (if your introducing them) that they are properly prepared.
3. As 2 but with the event organiser!
