Do You Have Common Sense?

I’ve just heard of the untimely death of a work colleague.

David Spours, who lived in Bristol, ran a telecommunications company in Swindon for a number of years with my friend David Millen. They two of them had known each other for 35 years.

For a period of three years in the 1980’s, I along with others on the salesforce, would listen to words of advice from David S. each Monday morning…and on one occasion, David spelt out some great common sense advice which can be applied to many business-style situations whether they are sales-related or not.

Following a sales or client meeting, one would frequently dash back to the office, or off to another meeting, without fully checking to see whether paperwork had been completed correctly. This would happen because of time pressure, lack of concentration or over excitement with having just  “landed the deal”.

David highlighted this rule which I still use (even in the digital age) after a briefing meeting, conference or the signing of a contract for my services. It is simply this – if you are travelling by car, stop your vehicle within a mile of your client’s offices and thoroughly read what has just been signed or agreed in the meeting. If an agreement or contract hasn’t been correctly completed or signed, you can quickly zip back to your client within minutes (hopefully before they’ve gone into another meeting!) If on foot, or public transport, follow the same procedure within 5 minutes of exiting your clients offices.
