Just recently, I attended a professorial lecture where an academic was explaining her research to an audience of business people, academics; students and representatives from local government. The host, herself an academic, introduced her colleague by outlining her credentials, experience, research and papers written.
Her introduction lasted well over a minute. Audiences who attend these types of events are not there to be motivated or inspired but to receive highbrow information.
Consequently they need to be reassured they are listening to an expert. This is a quite different scenario from the run-of-mill introductions for a keynote or after-dinner speech where short, punchy introduction are standard.
