One of the unofficial duties of a Master of Ceremonies or an event host is to give some encouragement to a speaker or presenter before they go on stage. Of course, a professional event host will have spoken to those who are to perform well in advance of any event. It’s something I do automatically and over the years this tactic has been useful.
On many occasions speakers, and they can be the experienced ones as well as the rookies, have said to me things like: “I don’t feel as though I’m prepared” or “I didn’t realise I only have twenty minutes, I really need thirty” and the one which is very hard to handle, “I’m so nervous – what can I do to stop the butterflies in my stomach”? If time allows I can and do take people to one side and have gone through their speech or presentation. This can be a time consuming and on occasions, a fruitless activity – some people ought not to be company spokespeople or ambassadors as they simply don’t know how to communicate ideas and generate confidence in others. Quite often though, a few gentle words of encouragement, or offering sound advice seems to do the trick – “you’ll be great” said with a smile, always goes down well!
