Years ago when I was on the salesforce of a well-known brand, I decided to take my Xmas holiday time break downunder – New South Wales to be precise. On returning to the Northern Hemisphere and hard slog, I was taken aback one morning by a remark from a member of my regional management team. Having heard of my trip overseas he said something along the lines of “how could you afford to do that?” in a very condescending tone. He probably thought it was banter, de riguer in the office equipment world at that time. I wasn’t impressed and still think the person concerned should have kept his trap firmly shut.
It seems that all too often people say things they shouldn’t and as a consequence they upset others. I abhor individuals who sport a loose tongue. Don’t they realise they are just shooting themselves in the foot? Saying something inappropriate when you’ve been invited to host an event is possibly the worst thing one could do. I’ve mentioned before about leaving your ego “outside the door”, tact and diplomacy must rule the roost when the spotlight is on you.
