Sometime ago, I went along to a function where the MC / Toastmaster and a member of the Toastmasters Guild (or as they are sometimes called, the red-coat brigade) was officiating. He was involved in the usual announcing of guests, collecting presents and so on…I knew the wife of the host quite well. She chatted to me afterwards complaining about him. She thought he looked tired and seemed flustered on occasions.
I understood what she meant and it transpired that our Toastmaster had officiated at an event earlier in the day. There are, of course, circumstances when you can do this. If, for example, you’re a speaker and are delivering the same message to two different audiences on the same day, say 50 miles or even 100 miles apart, then it is achieveable without losing one’s professionalism….but if you are a Toastmaster officiating at a wedding or at a special birthday you have to look prepared and professional. These types of events can last for many hours, and it’s only right that you’re fit for purpose….or in other words “Don’t bite off more than you can chew”.
