Margate FC face Dulwich Hamlet FC in the FA Cup 2nd Qualifying Round at Hartsdown Park, Margate this Saturday. It will be the third time the two clubs have met in the competition.
The first match between the two clubs was played on November 14th, 1936 in the 4th Qualifying Round at Hartsdown Park. Nearly 4,000 spectators saw The Hamlet beat the home side by two goals to one. This was the first time that the famous amateurs of Dulwich Hamlet had ever beaten a professional side – a major coup for the South Londoners, whose team on the day included a number of amateur internationals. For Margate, it was to be their last FA Cup match played under the nursery arrangement with Arsenal Football Club. The goalscorer for Margate was a 16-year old Reg Lewis, who went on to play for the Arsenal. He scored both goals in the Gunner’s 2-0 victory over Liverpool in the 1950 Cup Final. He also, as a junior, had played for Dulwich Hamlet.
It is hoped that the history of the first 100 years of Margate FC competing in the FA Cup, by Gordon Wallis and Jeremy Jacobs, will be published in 2014.
