Better Than 1908?

The haul of gold medals won by Great Britain & N.I. at the London Olympics is now greater than the number they achieved in London in July 1908 when the competition for medals was somewhat less.
This has been a remarkable achievement by Team GB  who did well in Beijing just four years ago. But consider for a moment the lack of medals won by Greece and Spain, two countries who have held the Games in recent times. They appear to have gone backwards and one has to question why Australia may end up in the medals table below their antipodean neighbours New Zealand.
