Some would say it would be rude not to! And they may well be right…although one could take the view that talking shop is a “no no” when you’re at a function which is meant to be fun rather than serious.
At the #HOT50AWARDS which were held at the Ministry of Sound and superbly hosted by Wesley Mendy, one was surrounded by many event professionals, event suppliers including some speakers, the odd conference presenter & MC. There were quite a few event PR people and of course some event legends. It was great to see Kanya King on stage.
With most events, people do like to chat and inevitably the subject will move on to work and the challenges we all face on a day-to-day basis. I think the strategy here is to be friendly and engaging, rather than overtly “on networking duty”.
Using the age old techniques of TED as pointed out to me by the Manchester-based networking guru, Will Kintish, can serve you well at any type of networking event.
Confused?
Well, it’s like this…
T – “Tell me more………….”
E – “Explain how that impacts your business”
D – “Describe how you prepare for an event where your the facilitator or host?”
Happy networking!
