Some of the weekend was spent at Manston yesterday afternoon. There was tons of nostalgic stuff at the former RAF base. Enjoy the video.

On three occasions this week, I’ve had to be curt with cold callers. All three were obviously calling from somewhere abroad, all three presented themselves with English names like James or Nigel and all commenced their spiel with the usual and deeply patronising “how are you today”? As if they really care – which of course they don’t. Then followed the reason for their call. Unfortunately, their diction and grammar was so poor I couldn’t make out whether they were trying to sell internet services, computer support or pet food. One of these poor souls called me at 10pm last night and as you can imagine I wasn’t too pleased. Part of customer profiling is being sensitive to the culture, environment and needs of your target audience. B-2-C calls at ten o’clock in the evening are a complete No No.
Earlier this year, I posted an article by “The Negotiator” Neville Spiers all about “how are you today”. It’s a funny article but so true and goes hand-in-hand with the post of a few days ago about cold-callers and salesmen who are poorly trained in the art of verbal and telephone communication. Here’s my video on cold-calling shot for the business platform sellingsuccess.tv

It’s been announced this morning that France has been chosen to host the European Football Championships in 2016. Congratulations to them. More to the point, will this mean that England’s bid to host the World Cup in 2018 is now in jeopardy?

Mark Pickles – You will never have to join a queue to make cold calls!
Mark is a B2B sales expert and I’m in accord with his views on telephone cold-calling which he makes reference to on his profile. In short Mark believes, as do I, that many firms and salespeople alike don’t work hard enough at getting new business. He cites these reasons:
•Sales people rarely receive professional training, so invariably lack the skills and awareness to consistently get results.
•A deep reluctance to actually pick up the telephone, and the fear of constant rejection
•Many business owners are experts in their field, but not in selling
•Finally, the few with the expertise often lack the time to do it themselves.

How very apt that this week we’re celebrating the evacuation of some 338,000 British and Allied troops from the beaches at Dunkirk. The state of the country’s economy may have led to the creation of the Conservative-led collaborative coalition government at this month’s election – and I think it’s imperative that we all club together and get Britain out of the economic “hole” we find ourselves in, so let’s have some Dunkirk Spirit in 2010.
Turning back to events of 70 years ago, you can view maps of the Dunkirk evacuation on this BBC webpage and there’s more to read here. The Royal British Legion has a page dedicated to this week’s events which makes interesting reading.

So a comedian is to take the place of Adrian Chiles on BBC TV’s The One Show from July. Mancunian Jason Manford must have been a surprise choice for many but I wish him well. Let’s see how he gets along with his lovely co-presenter Christine “English Channel” Bleakley.

As promised, here’s another slice of football history for you to enjoy in the lead up to the 2010 Finals. I love how BBC presenter David Coleman describes the events from Chile v Italy in the summer of 1962. The two teams were to meet again at Sunderland in 1966.

Occasionally I like to promote other sales guru’s and professional speakers on this site. In this short video, Frank Furness explains how he gets to his preferred customers who are business owners and wealthy people. I also like his idea of having a monthly meet up with other professionals.
Other methods of finding new business will be discussed at Speak Connect Engage on July 7th in Central London. To reserve your place simply click on the Eventbrite page or on the blue bar on the top of this web-page.

Earlier this evening, England played their final pre-World Cup warm-up international at Wembley. The result was a 3-1 victory over Mexico who play South Africa in the opening match at the world’s biggest football event next month. Over the next couple of weeks, I’ll be posting some World Cup moments from the past. One many Englishman will never forget was Gordon Banks’ great save from Pele at the 1970 finals in Guadalajara, Mexico.
