Gender, Design And Marketing

Wednesday, March 31st, 2010

London, UK

Over the past few weeks, I’ve been reading through “Gender, Design & Marketing” by Gloria Moss. Did you know that you can increase people’s perception of the usefulness of a product by changing its design? And that people will pay up to 50% more for a product they like the look of?
Gloria Moss has helped businesses by revealing to them exactly what men and women like in the way of design and the way men and women’s preferences differ. Businesses may think they know what their customers want but research reveals the detailed picture of what in fact male and female customers are looking for. In “Gender, Design and Marketing” she draws on a hundred years of research, as well as her own research, to reveal the specifics of what women like visually in terms of colours, shapes, dimensionality and themes. What this reveals is that many companies are failing to optimise the design of their products or services for audiences of women.

Gender, Design and Marketing – certainly worth a read.

Vote For A Web 2.0 General Election!

Sunday, March 28th, 2010

London, UK

My friend, Jonathan Gabay Brand Forensics, was interviewed on BBC NEWS 24 earlier today. He was speaking to news presenter Nick Owen about the new Conservative Party posters. Funnily enough, Jonathan appeared in the famous Labour Isn’t Working poster from 1979. One of the points raised in the interview, concerned the use of social networks like Twitter and Facebook and how instrumental they will be in the forthcoming campaign which may get underway this week.

Here’s the clip from this afternoon:

Are You Relaxed When Presenting?

Saturday, March 27th, 2010

London, UK

A few days ago, I posted a piece about the BBC commentator and broadcaster Harry Carpenter who died recently. As the clip says, Harry was a natural presenter. *Relaxed and unflappable, he turned his hand to many sports other than boxing for which he was most famous.

*Relaxation when making a speech, demonstration or presentation will be discussed on May 12th at Speak, Connect, Engage in Central London.

How To Reinforce The Sale

Friday, March 26th, 2010

London, UK

Sales guru Geoff Burch, in his latest sales tip, talks about reinforcement. He approaches this subject in a familiar way, well familiar if you’ve been on the sales force for any length of time!

Years ago, I would hear from prospective customers, comments such as “we never enter into a 60-month lease”, “the copy quality isn’t good enough” or “we’ve always done business with suppliers of Rank Xerox/Canon/Brother equipment”. The trick then is to ask the customer reasons why but using the right language as Geoff mentions out in the video clip below. You’ve got to box clever if you’re to going change your prospects thinking.

So to overcome customer objections:

1. Don’t interrupt the customer.

2. Repeat the objection back to the customer (in order to clarify your thinking)

3. Ask the customer what is required for him/her to do business with you.

When the outcome is positive or when you are visiting an existing customer in order to obtain a referral or testimonial, ask something like “what was it about our value proposition or offering that made you decide to choose us”.

I’ll be discussing how to get referrals and testimonials at “Speak,Connect,Engage” on May 12th in Central London

Tackling Conflict Resolution At Work

Wednesday, March 24th, 2010

London, UK

Last night, I attended a book launch party in Covent Garden. Mediator & Lawyer Jane Gunn, has published “How To Beat Bedlam In The Boardroom And Boredom In The Bedroom”. One of the best “how to” guides I’ve read in quite a while, “Bedlam” can help anybody who finds themselves in a fix at business and/or on the domestic front.

Many titles that deal with resolving conflict or disputes seem to be very cerebral and intended for the academic market. Jane’s book though makes this aspect of the legal world accessable to the masses and I’m certain her book will be a best-seller in no time at all.

A few days ago, I interviewed Jane for my You Tube Channel

BBC Sports Commentator Dies

Monday, March 22nd, 2010

London, UK

Last year over on my old Corporate Presenter blogsite, I posted a couple of items on the passing of David Vine and Reg Gutteridge. Both great sports broadcasters. This afternoon, we’ve heard the news that the BBC legendary boxing commentator Harry Carpenter has passed away.

I’ll always remember him as one of the best sports presenters. He ranks alongside David Coleman, Stuart Storey and the late Bill McLaren.

Are You An Earlybird?

Monday, March 22nd, 2010

London, UK

Those of you who have downloaded the free Cold Calling Tips on my Training Page may want to give Tip No. 3 a go this week. Making three calls before nine o’clock in the morning and three after five o’clock in the afternoon might just pay dividends. Also, it means that you could dial another 1200 or so contacts throughout the working year. In tough economic times, doing more numbers maybe the key to your business success.

If calling isn’t your bag, then doing administrative work early in the morning, perhaps for an hour each day, will free up time for more important matters during standard working hours. Think what you could do with an extra five hours a week. Of course it means getting up an hour earlier each morning! Can you handle it?

Down To Margate

Sunday, March 21st, 2010

London, UK

Mods & Rockers at Margate, 1964

Yesterday I took a high-speed train, for the first time, to Margate from St Pancras and was deposited into Margate in around the same sort of time it would have taken me to drive there. I was able to do some work, read a little and arrived stress free. The journey home, door-to-door, was completed in just over two hours, including a tube ride on the infamous Northern Line.
With the price of petrol about to shoot up, income still down compared to 2008 and the recession still around, I expect train journeys to feature highly for the foreseeable future.
