Obama Wins

Friday, February 29th, 2008

London, UK

I’m grateful to my colleague Freddie Daniells of The London Speaker. He’s posted an article on the London Speaker blog concerning the speaking merits of Barack Obama and Hilary Clinton. Experienced Toastmaster International members gave their verdict on the race for the Democratic nomination. They feel that Obama is edging it. Read their findings here

How to Win Speaking Contests

Monday, February 25th, 2008

London, UK

Looming on the horizon is competition night at London Corinthians Toastmasters Club. On the evening of March 13th it’ll be the International Speech and Evaluation Contests and I’ll be participating in both. As an ATM (Advanced Toastmaster), expectations are high.
Attending a Toastmasters meeting is like free theatre in which you, if you want to, can participate. Another well-known blogger, Ellee Seymour goes to her speaking club in Cambridge. She clearly enjoys her time there.

So, if you’ve a few hours to spare in a couple of weeks time and you’re in the Victoria area of Central London, please join us.

My speech that evening, will be loosely based on the talk I gave at The Rotary Club of Broadstairs last week. It was well received and most of the audience seemed to keep awake for the entire 15 minutes! At the contest my speech along with the other contestants will be shorter in duration. It’ll be a great evening.

Expanding on my Facebook “status”, I’d like to highlight, in brief, what is required to be successful in presenting, or indeed anything in life. Any self-employed person who works on a contract or freelance basis needs, in my view, to tell the their story, every working day. Specifically, this involves setting goals, sticking to your plans; telephoning production companies, agents; overcoming setbacks and delays – and of course blogging! This upkeep of this site site along with Corporate Presenter is vital.

Tomorrow, I’ll be setting aside time which will be devoted to organising an event where I’ll be the corporate host. On top of this there’s the usual tele-marketing and later, I’ll be preparing for my radio show on Tuesday evening. Tuesday and Wednesday are work days and during breaks I’ll be on the phone. Thursday’s are great for cold-calling and networking – I’ll be doing both! On Friday, there’s a couple of business appointments.

There’s some good blog sites for those of you who want to learn more about goal setting:

Always be prepared to speak

Sunday, February 24th, 2008

London, UK

Is a golden rule very sensible thing to remember. Lisa Braithwaite highlights this point further. At Toastmasters, we’re all meant to have a speech ready just in case there is a no-show at a meeting.

Of course, preparation, whether its for an audition, speech, job interview or business presentation is key. “Public Speaking Expert” has some interesting articles.

My guest this week on “PressPlay” will be Anna Zimmerman.

Anna is a hypnotherapist and workshop facilitator in the South London area.
She helps people make powerful and lasting change in their lives so they can experience their full potential. On her site are numerous testimonials, like this one:

I just wanted to let you know that after a few months I have been trying out the new skills you gave me, and I can’t believe how it has changed my attitude to so many things to do with work. Many thanks and I will come back and get something else fixed soon.’

Speakers Corner

Friday, February 22nd, 2008

London, UK

Iain Dale was on BBC Radio 4 this morning with veteran politician, Tony Benn. Both were discussing the relative merits of the proposed Speakers Corner due to be opened in Nottingham.

This would be based on the one in London which can be an excellent grounding for those of you wishing to improve your public speaking. This may sound a little bizarre but consider these:

1. Speaking in public, and in the open, will force you to increase your vocal volume.

2. You will gain learn to handle and work a crowd.

3. At first, hecklers will intimidate you but in time, you’ll learn how to deflect their outbursts.

4. You’ll have to breath through your diaphragm.

Iain Dale is an accomplished public speaker and is represented by Specialist Speakers.

It would be brilliant if we could hear him live and outdoors!
Elsewhere in the Blogosphere, there are many authors who I suspect would make excellent speakers. Here are two to start with!
