Communicating With Clarity

Saturday, September 4th, 2010

London, UK

In the 1970′s Coventry City had a goalkeeper called Bryan King. He became infamous for the amount of “you knows” he used in a television interview. Fast forward to 2010 and here’s the highly skilled Aston Villa winger, Ashley Young, also struggling to make himself understood!

We don’t really expect our talented footballers to have a mellifluous turn of phrase do we? Besides it would be incongruous. But for those of us in business who need to present our ideas clearly and concisely, lacking clarity or stumbling over our words will inevitably mean lost opportunities. Worse still, you’ll lose credibility amongst your peers and potential customers.
One of the ways in which you can come across better is to slow your speech right down. At tv presenter “school” a few years ago, I along with the other students, were asked to watch and record the television news. Then we’d copy the style and speak at the same rate or words per minute. You see newscasters tend to speak at a slower rate than we do in normal conversation. As a result, you’re able to easily understand them. Try slowing down, you may find it’ll help you.

Talking With The Devil

Sunday, April 25th, 2010

London, UK

Yesterday afternoon, I met up with Chris Mounsey whose on-line alter ego is the political blogger Devil’s Kitchen. You may have seen Chris on television recently speaking on behalf of the Libertarian Party who are fielding a few candidates at General Election. I videoed him for my Movin’ Up series on YouTube and then afterwards discussed, with the award-winning blogger, the state of politics and the forthcoming election.

Both of us mentioned the apparent lack of posters and general political activity in our respective constituencies. Outside of the London area perhaps there’s more to be seen but we both couldn’t help thinking that the turnout on May 6th could be less than the 62% in 2005. The apparent malaise maybe derived from the expenses scandal, the general distrust of politicians and their “spin”, the “first-past-the-post” system – who knows.

The Pyrenees – a great place for hiking

Saturday, April 17th, 2010

London, UK

TV and Radio presenter, George Lamb is interviewed in today’s Independent newspaper about his favourite holidays.

Many of us, no doubt, have been fortunate to have seen many parts of the world and George is no exception; like him, I enjoy going off the beaten track and speak to the locals. However, this can get you into an awkward situation, as I once found out in some secluded part of the Cuban capital, Havana. Equally as enjoyable, are country walks in England. One of the best in recent times was a circumnavigation of 9 miles near Hereford.

One of my travelling regrets is spending too much time in our nearest neighbour, France. Although I adore the Cote D’Azur, Provence, WW1 battlefields and the TGV’s, looking back, I think travels further afield would have enhanced my “world experience”. For example, how many of you have visited the Philippines? With over 7000 islands, you may need several lifetimes to visit them all and you could say the same about all the other Pacific islands. My current wish-list includes Mongolia, Chile, São Tomé and Príncipe and the Mexican province of Baja California.

In June, I’m off to the Val D’Aran area in the Pyrenees (see photo from 2005) for a spot of hiking with a few friends. Five hours drive from the nearest airports (Toulouse & Barcelona) this part of the world has some stunning scenery and one can see for 100 miles when you’re at the top!

Assuming you can get away this summer, where will you be going?

Are You Relaxed When Presenting?

Saturday, March 27th, 2010

London, UK

A few days ago, I posted a piece about the BBC commentator and broadcaster Harry Carpenter who died recently. As the clip says, Harry was a natural presenter. *Relaxed and unflappable, he turned his hand to many sports other than boxing for which he was most famous.

*Relaxation when making a speech, demonstration or presentation will be discussed on May 12th at Speak, Connect, Engage in Central London.

Do You Have Respect?

Tuesday, March 16th, 2010

London, UK

Years ago when I was selling medium-ticket office products, I was taught to treat the equipment (in this case photocopiers) with respect. It’s all part of being a sales professional. The very worst we would do, was to create a paper-jam and show potential customers how easy it was to remove the offending A4-sized article. But even that was frowned upon by the in-house demonstration and sales trainers.
When doing a pitch/demonstration or a motivational speech you have to treat your audience, environment and props with respect and courtesy, if not, you will lose you audience and with it the sale.

I guess this bloke wont be back on QVC anytime soon:
