Can you believe the football season is upon us once again? Seems like only yesterday we were all glued to the television seeing England’s World Cup campaign in South Africa falter. But all that’s forgotten now as the domestic season gets underway. Senior football started with a Championship match at Carrow Road this evening where newly-promoted Norwich City lost at home to Watford.

US-based speechwriter Ian Griffin has written a very interesting blog post about panel moderation. Never a job for the inexperienced, a panel moderator like an event host, stadium announcer or event presenter really needs to do his or her homework not only on the audience but also those who are taking part. In a few days time, he’ll be adding more tips. I’m rather hoping he’ll mention about one’s personal preparation which I’ve blogged about in the context of public-speaking, stadium announcing and presenting on more than one occasion in the past! A few months ago I mentioned Alexa ranking in a blog post. Since last year, my Alexa rank (which is just one of the metrics you can use to establish a site’s traffic) has decreased (which is good) from about 1,500,000 to under 300,000. My Google Rank has also improved from 1/10 to 4/10. This proves that SEO can work well but of course it’s only half the story – still its all progress.
There are 291,740 sites with a better three-month global Alexa traffic rank than Jeremyjacobs.com. The time spent in a typical visit to this site is roughly eleven minutes

Brazil 4 Italy 1. Can’t believe it was 40 years ago. Can you? There’ll be more about England’s challenge in 1970 in a few days time. Of course, Brazil will once again, pose a threat this time round in South Africa.
On BBC London at lunchtime today:
Interaction between Mike Ramsden and female sports reporter after discussing Fulham’s victory in Germany against Wolfsburg and their draw against Hamburg SV in the Europa League.
Anchor Mike Ramsden to female sports reporter:
“So what do we know about Hamburg”?
Female reporter replies: “Well they are another German club”.
Unbelievable!

Sales guru Geoff Burch, in his latest sales tip, talks about reinforcement. He approaches this subject in a familiar way, well familiar if you’ve been on the sales force for any length of time!
Years ago, I would hear from prospective customers, comments such as “we never enter into a 60-month lease”, “the copy quality isn’t good enough” or “we’ve always done business with suppliers of Rank Xerox/Canon/Brother equipment”. The trick then is to ask the customer reasons why but using the right language as Geoff mentions out in the video clip below. You’ve got to box clever if you’re to going change your prospects thinking.
So to overcome customer objections:
1. Don’t interrupt the customer.
2. Repeat the objection back to the customer (in order to clarify your thinking)
3. Ask the customer what is required for him/her to do business with you.
When the outcome is positive or when you are visiting an existing customer in order to obtain a referral or testimonial, ask something like “what was it about our value proposition or offering that made you decide to choose us”.
I’ll be discussing how to get referrals and testimonials at “Speak,Connect,Engage” on May 12th in Central London

Some of you would have enjoyed watching the BAFTA’s last Sunday night on BBC television. They were hosted by presenter Jonathan Ross. As ever, he put in a superb performance full of verve and wit. But I was a little disappointed by some of those who were given the task of acquainting the viewers with the nominees of the various categories. Somehow, those up-and-coming actors didn’t seem to be able to correctly read the auto-cue. Instead of polished performances, we saw, in my view, a collection of rabbits staring into headlights. Stiff and inarticulate, the link presenters could have done a bit better. As I keep on banging on, preparation and practice are pivotal to a smooth performance.
Another professional event host is BBC newsreader Kate Silverton. Kate hosted the “Sunday Times 100 Best Small Companies To Work For” awards the other evening and was superb. I was a guest of the main sponsor and thoroughly enjoyed the event – well done to the winners!
