David Watkin, who has recently passed away, was born in my home town of Margate. A brilliant cinematographer, his life was remembered on BBC Radio 4’s “The Last Word” by presenter Matthew Bannister. There’s an obituary from the New York Times here and his IMDB profile is here.

He’ll be best remembered for “Chariots of Fire” and “Out of Africa” (for which he won an Oscar in 1985). I enjoyed the film work on “The Memphis Belle” and “Cuba” which starred Sean Connery. At Leicester Square Television, we’re considering doing a special show featuring viewers favourite films. What would be yours? (A question I’d like to pose to Iain Dale, Ellee Seymour, Cranmer & Last of the Few)
One of David Watkins short films was the one below about a suitcase. Some of you may recognise The Walpole Bay Hotel and the sun-decks on the beach:

Dr Zhivago is my favourite for its combination of politics, sex, location, great casting and, as in all great films, an unhappy ending.
