Speaking in France

Posted in Public Speaking, 2007, UK at 11:58 pm by Jeremy Jacobs

London, UK
Gave a 45 minute talk (in English) about “getting over those speaking nerves” in France this weekend. One of the points I raised to the audience was about getting speaking opportunities.

You could start with your local Chamber of Commerce, Rotary Club or Church. There are hundreds of associations up and down the country (and abroad!) who would like to hear from you.

Getting into Radio Broadcasting

Posted in Radio Reporting, Personal Development, 2007, UK at 9:36 pm by Jeremy Jacobs

Somebody asked me the other day how to get on radio. “Not easy”, I replied. My route started with BBC local radio, then an RSL.

This website is a really good source of information

Speak the Truth

Posted in Public Speaking, 2007, UK at 9:28 pm by Jeremy Jacobs

As Tom Antion points out on his blog, if you’re going to state facts, make sure you get them right. You never know who’s on the audience!

Using fake facts and statistics is a great way to elicit a laugh from your audience. When using this technique there are a few things you have to remember to ensure a successful delivery. You don’t want to forget anything and leave the audience confused about the message

Another public speaking article discusses using a deadpan expression. You can combine this technique with fake facts and statistics for maximum results, especially when your information sounds very official with numbers and specifics. Also, by overemphasizing the information, to the point that they can tell you are trying too hard, you’ll convey the absurdity of the facts or statistics.

One public speaking engagement I did for a group of secretaries I commented on the fact that their bosses became executives only because they couldn’t handle being secretaries. I definitely won the crowd over with that line! But of course, that’s 100 percent true based on a recent survey taken by Harvard!

New Radio Station - JCom 101.4FM

Posted in Radio Reporting, 2007, UK at 11:03 pm by Jeremy Jacobs

London, UK

A new Jewish radio station is about to hit the airwaves,
and we hope you will play your part in making it a success!
As from 7am on Sunday 28th October, Jcom will be broadcasting through the internet (www.jcomradio.net) with programmes created for every section of the community.
The station has a full schedule of features covering news,
phone-ins, interviews, music, sports, food, religion, travel, comedy, children’s interests and lifestyles.
For the first four weeks (28th Oct – 24th Nov), Jcom will also be
broadcasting across North West London on 101.4m on FM.
The station very much hopes this will be a prelude to getting
a full-time licence for radio broadcasting, and expects to make
an application to the radio regulator, OFCOM, which controls
such matters, at the earliest possible opportunity.
If all goes to plan, 2008 will herald the UK’s first full-time,
permanent Jewish station – something we all agree is long overdue.
Fifty presenters, producers and other volunteers are working tirelessly to create a community radio station, but there is always an opportunity for you to get involved – it could just be a hobby, or turn into a whole new career!
Individuals and organisations can become members of Jcom,
and the broadcasts and website provide a unique route
for advertisers and sponsors to reach the Jewish audience.

New Web TV Channel

Posted in Public Speaking, 2007, TV Presenting, UK at 7:30 pm by Jeremy Jacobs

London, UK

Spent most of today filming in the West End for a brand new Web TV Channel which launches in December. I’ll be co-presenting with the fabulous Claire Bueno for LSQTV which, as some of you may have gathered, stands for Leicester Square TV. The channel is the brainchild of serial entrepreneur and business developer, Ian Maddison and his charming wife Elizabeth.

LSQTV’s content will focus around the film and theatre world and will feature life in London WC2. But if you had the opportunity to have some input, what would you like to see? An interview with George Clooney or Angelina Jolie perhaps, or how about hearing about those Chinese restaurants with Michael Winner?

Looking After Your Speaking Voice

Posted in Public Speaking, Personal Development, 2007, UK at 10:55 am by Jeremy Jacobs

London, UK

The following article was posted here last month. I’ll be mentioning some of the tips this evening:

Just the other day, I attended a course run by Helen Sewell of Simply Speaking. These are her top tips:

Keeping hydrated

1. Always drink plenty of water. If you are dehydrated your throat will be dehydrated. Try to drink eight glasses of water a day.

2. Keep your home humidified. Central heating dries the atmosphere, which can dry out your vocal cords. Put a bowl of water near radiators, or place a damp towel over them.

3. Get enough sleep. Being tired will affect your voice in the same way that it affects any muscular performance. You should rest your voice at times during the day for the same reason. Take time to relax, unwind and breathe. A healthy, less stressed you will be more likely to have a healthy, less stressed voice.

Food and drink

1. Eat regular meals and try to eat a balanced diet. Do not eat late at night, as this encourages indigestion, which can affect the voice.

2. Limit your intake of foods which can increase the likelihood of indigestion, including spicy foods, citrus fruits, tomatoes, fatty foods, chocolate, alcohol and caffeine.

3. Try not to drink more than 3 units of alcohol a day, as this can make your vocal cords swell and your voice become husky, rough and low pitched.

Smoking

1. Smoking, or being in a smoky environment, can dry out and irritate your throat. Regular smoking can make your vocal cords thicker, and your voice lower pitched and harsher.

2. Smoking also damages your lungs, affecting your breathing and therefore your voice.

If you have a sore throat

A sore throat is your body’s way of telling you that something is not right. You should:

1. Rest your voice as much as possible.

2. Drink lots of cool drinks(not hot ones, as these can dry your throat)

3. Inhale steam

4. Eat a spoonful of honey

5. Suck pastilles or boiled sweets, or chew gum to keep your mouth moist.

6. Avoid medicated lozenges or cough sweets, as these will numb your throat, which means you are likely to talk more and potentially cause more damage.

Preparing for a Presentation

Posted in Corporate Presenting, Public Speaking, 2007 at 6:18 pm by Jeremy Jacobs

Paul Daniels makes an excellent point right at the end of this short video. There is no substitute for preparation!

Making yourself comfortable before going on stage or in front of camera is key. I have a little routine I go though and will be explaining that and a few other tips next Monday night at London Corinthians
